Keep Your Hooklocks Healthy This Winter
Are your locks starting to feel a little stiff?
Remember – Hooklocks are mechanical components, and like all mechanical parts, they need regular care to keep them performing at their best and to extend their lifespan.
During the winter months, salt, grit and cold temperatures can quickly cause locks to dry out or become sluggish/stiff. To prevent this, make sure to lubricate your locks every couple of weeks throughout winter.
Here’s how to keep your Hooklocks working smoothly:
- Grab a can of PTFE spray from any hardware store.
(Avoid using WD-40 — it is a solvent, not an ideal long-term lubricant – it will make them worse!)
- Spray into the lock barrel to keep the internal pins moving freely (you can be generous, just wipe away any excess)
- Drop down the Hook and spray into the back of the lock case.
This ensures the hook mechanism itself stays lubricated and protected from grit and moisture.
Regular maintenance like this will help prevent stiffness, reduce wear, and keep your locks functioning reliably all winter long.
